After they were gone
I stumbled down the paths we’d take
When we walked together
And saw our footprints in the snow,
In solitude, I stood there,
Among the ghostly memories,
Frozen in nature's cold heart
Until the thaw,
And the signs of their passing,
Melts Away.
My soul wailed when I found the path again,
Emptied of the signs of our passing,
But, still, my spirit knew the haunted places
Where lurked the joys, and pains,
And tribulations of our journey,
And it felt the lingering revenants.
In the long shadows of autumn,
I thought of the path once more,
And ached at our memories,
I heard their voices on the wind,
As they waited to judge the final tracks I'd leave,
And whether I was true to the path we'd set together.
